We have had a lot of sad news lately and I think we all need some cheering up. So here is a review of something that brings joy and laughter.
My Niece and I have a show we watch together. Its about a Dad, his adopted daughter, the woman he marries and their dog. This family grows into their roles with many awkward missteps and mistakes. Comedy ensues, cute huh?
Spy Family in Disguise
The show is called Spy x Family (the x is silent). Dad, Loid is a Spy, daughter, Anya is Telepathic, the wife, Yor is an Assassin and the dog, Bond can see the future. The daughter is the only one who knows all of this. She keeps all of this to herself for fear of being sent back to the orphanage.
Loid is the Spy codenamed Twilight. He is sent on a mission to stop a war between the nations of Ostania and Westalis. The mission requires Loid to be the parent of a student at the prestigious Eden College. Which is why he adopts Anya.
Anya used her telepathy to impress Loid with her inteligence. Unfortunately Anya is not as bright as her powers made her out to be. Anya is a cute and precious child who loves peanuts and we all love her. So does Loid, who does not realise this at first.
Anya Knows Everything
Most of the comedy comes from the many lies that Loid tells to keep Anya from knowing. Anya knows everything Loid knows and thinks this is exciting. To Anya, her new daddy is amazing and tells really good big lies.
For the mission to work Anya has to pass an entrance exam which she does, barely. This leads to why Loid marries Yor. Because the conservative, prestigious, Eden College requires BOTH parents attend the family interview.
Yes there is a lot of coincidence in this story. That Loid and Anya meet at the dressmaker shop is played for romance but also for laughs. Yor may be the assassin ‘Thorn Princess’ but she is quite awkward. Yor accepts the marriage of convenience. Her reason is the being single at 27 makes some question wether she is a spy.
Romance, Found Family, and a Dog.
It is very clear that both Loid and Yor are attracted to each other. Of course, Anya knows this. Anya is the glue that keeps her new parents together. As the story develops Anya’s exciting family continues to grow from a dream to reality. Anya will do everything she can to keep it together. While the adults are telling themselves it is only fake, Anya wants it to last forever.
The anime has not gotten to when we first meet the dog Bond. Bond is essential to a future story line. Bond is the final piece of Anya’s desired family. How it all comes to pass is exciting, dangerous and you will love it. It should be in the final episodes of this first series.
Life is Better When Shared
My Niece is a few episodes behind. Next Wednesday will be a bit of a binge session. I am looking forward to it. As Spy x Family infers life is better when it is shared. I know this is true.
If you want to watch Spy x Family you can see it on CrunchyRoll, Hulu and other streaming services. If that is too expensive try the Shonen Jump app which is less than $3 a month.
On Shonen Jump you can read the manga and get ahead of the animated series. There is little difference in the experience this is a great story that is brilliantly written and drawn. No wonder it got an animated series so quickly.
Phillip Hall has been too long in Melbourne to see AFL in the same light as those back in Fremantle. East Fremantle born and bred, he would love to see the Dockers back in the eight. But would settle for just beating West Coast twice a year.
