The Council of Imams Queensland (CIQ) issued a statement of gratitude for the "Love for 100 Years Response", a movement of solidarity with Islamic communities affected by the "language and tone" of recent media coverage surrounding extremist group ISIS.
The campaign, put together by Director of Welcome to Australia Brad Chilcott, has gathered over 2,000 signatures from various Christians denominations and citizens from all different backgrounds.
"The sad reality is that those purporting the fear of Muslims or Islam usually have had no first-hand experience with Muslims," the CIQ stated.
"Their views...are often influenced by the ideas and extreme images which are portrayed by mainstream media.
"Your action has clearly disrupted that image and perception, and for that we are truly grateful."
The Muslim group also condemned terrorist organisations carrying out atrocities "in the name of Islam".
"The actions of these groups undoubtedly contradict the teachings of the Islamic faith and detract from the numerous positive contributions Muslims make throughout various sectors of the broader Australian society."
Chilcott, a pastor and state Finalist in the Australia's Local Hero Award in 2013, is a dedicated campaigner for human rights and social justice.
