Christians took to the streets a day after St. Sebastian Church on Dilshad Garden in New Delhi was charred by still unknown assailants.
More than 3,000 protesters were seen swarming near the burnt building by dusk as they staged a vigil by candlelight calling for a thorough inquiry of the incident.
Christians rof various denominations have regarded the Dilshad Garden Church burning as a condemnable act. Anil Cuoto, the Archbishop of Delhi issued a memorandum directed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and cited the offence as a crime against the faith of the community.
His call for urgency to set a judicial enquiry also mentioned that this particular crime can happen anywhere where other religions thrive and could threaten lives of the faithful.
Protesters numbering around 5,000 sang "we want justice" in front of the police headquarters as Christian leaders visited the police commissioner of Delhi and Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung.
The urgent call for the investigation came after other minority religious leaders met with some members of the government regarding their fear and deprivation of their fundamental right to choose and practice religion.
It has been noted that there were other incidents prior to the burning of St. Sebastian Church which led Christians to show deep concern over the future of religious communities which have existed for thousands of years now.
