Who knew that Mr. Carson was such a romantic?
In the Downton Abbey Christmas special this year, the butler finally mustered up enough courage to ask for Mrs. Hughes' hand in marriage!
When it comes to sweet proposals, Mr. Carson (played by Jim Carter) would probably give Mr. Darcy a run for his money as he shyly asked Mrs. Hughes (played by Phyllis Logan) to be his wife after buying a cottage for them both to live in.
"Take your time to decide," he told her, "But know that I'm not marrying anyone else."
He even asked if she was offended by the proposal, but an elated Mrs. Hughes was anything but! "Oh Mr Carson I can assure the very last thing in the world that I am in this moment is offended," she answered.
The two then pour a celebratory drink, and Mrs. Hughes expressed surprise in "the fact that I can still get a proposal at my age," she said.
"I thought you'd never ask!" admitted Mrs. Hughes.
Mr. Carson's proposal came during the last few minutes of the episode. Other characters of Downton Abbey tackle love, grief, loyalty, and boundaries during this Christmas special.
