A former director of Planned Parenthood now turned pro-lifer wrote about pro-life facts that will surprise even other pro-lifers and possibly anger others.
On a detailed and well researched three-part piece for Life Site, Abby Johnson wrote about hormonal contraceptives and how those who oppose abortion should also be against these birth control methods.
She began by mentioning the world-famous mantra "Life begins at conception" and how hormonal contraceptives don't stop women from ovulating fifty percent of the time. Johnson questioned how these birth control methods then work during the times women continue to ovulate.
"These methods have a backup plan. Hormonal methods also work to thin the lining of the endometrium (uterine wall) so that a newly conceived human being (life begins at conception, right?) cannot implant on the uterine wall. Because the baby has nowhere to implant, they are spontaneously aborted."
Johnson, who admitted her piece will anger plenty of people, then continued to cite scientific data to back up her claim. She posted screenshots of literature about several popular hormonal birth control methods written by the manufacturers themselves.
The literature all detailed how hormonal birth control methods may prevent pregnancy by inhibiting a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterus, leading to the death of a fertilized egg.
Highly popular products were mentioned such as the Nuvaring, a hormonal contraceptive vaginal ring made by Merck; OrthoEvra, a transdermal patch that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin hormones plus other hormonal contraceptives used by millions of women around the world such as the Depo Provera and birth control pills.
Babies are not "aborted" every cycle, according to Johnson, but the risk is always there.
"Let's say that a demolition company was going to use a wrecking ball to destroy an old school. When the supervisor of the company asks the principal if they made sure to clear the building, the principal says, "We most likely did. We aren't 100% sure, but we are pretty confident." Would that be acceptable? Would you be willing to push that button that releases that wrecking ball? Would you be willing to risk that there may or may not be life in that building?"
The piece mentioned the Natural Family Planning, the only birth control method approved by the Catholic Church and Johnson herself. She suggested readers visit iusenfp.com to learn more about natural methods available for couples, methods that don't potentially destroy life.
"Fertility should be shared between a husband and wife. You don't get pregnant on your own. NFP is a beautiful way to help you share in that gift. It's worth your time to check it out."
