Christians have always had a thoughtful and informed dialogue on issues related to science. We live in a world that is increasingly shaped by scientific and technological advances, and Christ followers have been among the greatest shapers of modern science.
Early Christian scientists
Many great Christian minds set the foundation for modern science. Isaac Newton (pictured) spent more time writing on God than science, yet his contributions to maths and physics shaped these scientific fields.
German born Johannes Kepler advanced the fields of mathematics and astronomy, as well as theology. His writings were based on the foundation that God’s creation could be understood because God is a God of order.
Gregor Mendel (geneticist) and Blaise Pascal (mathematician) both wrote on the link between science and faith.
Institute for the Study of Christianity in an Age of Science and Technology
From these early foundations of science based on faith the Institute for the Study of Christianity in an Age of Science and Technology was started.
ISCAST aims to promote a thoughtful and informed dialogue between science, technology and Christianity. Since its inception in 1986, ISCAST has been at the forefront of exploring the relationship between these fields and has sought to help Christians integrate their faith with their scientific and technological pursuits. It helps Christians integrate their faith with their scientific and technological pursuits at school, university and church levels.
In exploring the relationship between science and faith we are reminded of the beauty and complexity of God's creation. Science can help us to better understand the intricacies of God’s world, and technology can be used to serve and love our neighbours in new and innovative ways.
However, we must also recognize that science does not have all the answers. Positivistic science cannot answer the “big” questions of life such as moral, ethical or philosophical issues.
Questions such as the meaning of life or whether an action is wise are areas faith can explore with confidence without the limitations of science.
ISCAST works to promote these ethical and philosophical approaches to emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. The organization recognizes that these technologies have the potential to transform society in profound ways and believes that Christians have an important role to play in shaping their development and use.ISCAST bring together scientists, theologians, philosophersand other scholars, who deepen our understanding of the world.
