What is my worth to God? Why am I here? Why would God love me?
These are just some questions we may ask ourselves from time to time, especially at the start of our journey with God. Even after we have journeyed for a while, we still may have times of feeling unsure of our path, our purpose and our worth.
We may start to listen to lies which question our worth and value, and we may start to believe them. Yet we need to remind ourselves of who we are in Christ and stand firm to the truth of who God is and who we are as his precious child.
Loved
We are God’s beloved children. Even before we chose to follow God, he chose us and wanted to be in close relationship with us. For us to have a close relationship with God, he sent his one and only son, Jesus, to come to earth, to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, so we would be able to have a close relationship with God.
‘But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.’ Romans chapter 5, verse 8
This is our worth to God.
That he sent Jesus for us; and he did this just for you.
Because of Jesus and his sacrifice, we can freely come to God and enter his holy presence. We have been adopted into his family and we are now a loved and precious child of God.
Child of God
God is our heavenly Father, and we are precious to him.
‘The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father”.’ Romans chapter 8, verse15
As children of God, we have been adopted into his royal family and can come boldly into his presence.
‘So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.’ Hebrews chapter 4, verse16
As children of God, we can have this close and intimate relationship with God, not because we have earned it through our works, but it is through God’s grace.
‘For by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.’ Ephesians chapter 2, verses 8–9
Grace is undeserved favour, and it is God’s gift to us.
Chosen
‘But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.’ 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 9
God has chosen us to be a part of his royal family, for good works.
‘For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.’ Ephesians chapter 2, verse10
What is this good works?
Jesus spoke to his disciples about abiding in him and out of that abiding comes the result of spiritual fruit.
‘You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.’ John chapter 15, verse16
We have been chosen to know, love and follow God, and then to bear fruit for his kingdom. This is why we were created; to know God and to make him known and to glorify his kingdom.
We are of great worth to God, and I pray we can gain a deeper revelation of this worth and of who we are in Him so we can boldly walk in his ways and produce lasting spiritual fruit.
